american university. an assistant professor is under fire after breast-feeding her baby during class. the incident happened two weeks ago during the first day of sex, gender, and culture class. professor adrienne pine brought her infant daughter to class and breast fed without covering up in front of 40 students. she said online that she couldn't take her daughter to daycare because she was sick, and canceling class did not seem like an option. students are speaking out on both sides of the debate. >> i felt rather uncomfortable in the class. i don't go to classrooms to feel uncomfortable. >> i think women should be able to breast-feed in public because it's not unnatural and is not something we should be ashamed of. >> professor pine declined to comment. the school issued a statement that said, "au does not have a policy that specifically addresses breast-feeding. the university is guided by personal law which does not prohibit or allow breast-feeding in certain environments."

information, we will pass that along. melissa mollet, news 4. back to you. a developing story out of the middle east. protests over a film critical of the muslim prophet muhammad are turning deadly. secretary of state hillary clinton confirming demonstrators killed a state department officer at the u.s. consulate in the libyan city of benghazi. clinton is calling on libya's president to help protect americans in his country. the u.s. is also working with governments in other countries to protect americans abroad. protests also erupting in egypt today. this is the u.s. embassy in cairo, where demonstrators scaled walls and tore down an american flag. most of the embassy staff had left the compound earlier about being warned about the protest. this violence was also sparked by that film made by a california man. someone later dubbed excerpts from it into arabic and posted them on youtube. breaking news. nearly 130 people are dead in two huge factory fires in pakistan. the largest fire at a garment

factory in karachi, where crews are still trying to put out the fire. many of the 103 who died were trapped in the basement. 25 others are dead in a shoe factory fire in lahore. many of pakistan's factories lack basic safety equipment, including fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems. president obama heads west today. he's set to campaign in las vegas this evening. nevada is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested states this year. the polls show the president and mitt romney essentially tied there. the president visiteded reno yesterday and spoke at the national guard convention. romney is ramping up his campaign less than two months before election day. he's in florida for a private fund-raiser, and his campaign has added a second stop in the sunshine state. romney also scrapped his plans to take this upcoming weekend off at his beach house in san diego. his aides say he'll spend the weekend campaigning instead. today romney will be in our area and hold a rally in fairfax.

the first lady will also visit virginia tomorrow. the first lady will speak to her husband's supporters in richmond. and then give a speech at mary washington. mitt romney's wife ann rommy will speak in leesburg on friday. a young man who brought a gun to school pointed a gun at his teacher, his class, and then himself before being restrained. the stemmers run middle school in essex was put on lockdown yesterday. this comes two weeks after a student at perry hall high school shot another student in the cafeteria. the victim of that shooting was released from the hospital on monday. the gunman accused, 15-year-old robert gladden, is being charged as an adult with attempted murder and assault. this morning a mother wants to know who shot and killed her son as he walked to school in prince george's county. someone shot marckel ross on old central avenue in capitol heights as he walked to high school. he was a junior there.

his mother told news 4 a group of boys bullied her son last year. she said the bullying was so intense she took her complaints all the way to the board of education. despite that, her son made good grades, though. >> every quarter last year, and we had been talking about him going to college. and i told him i also would like to see him go in the reserves. i'm not going to rest until i find out who killed my son and why. >> prince george's county police offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. apparently, thieves took advantage of the power outages after the storm in prince george's county. business owners reported several break-ins on saturday. the owner of this shell gas station in clinton told news 4 thieves targeted his business. grus reportedly stole copper pipes, damaging the ac unit, which will cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair. he also says security units were not working because of the power outage. there's this phone thing happening today. it's being touted adds one of

standardized test results. the obama administration approved the first group of applications to the deferred action for childhood arrivals program. the department of homeland security is allowing a small group of immigrants to get work permit s and avoid deportation for two years. to qualify, they have to be younger than 30 years old and have lived here for at least five years. the agency so far has received 72,000 applications. the irs is giving a former swiss banker $104 million for helping to bring in tax cheats. bradley brinkenfeld told the government what went on in ubs's wealth management division. he served two years in prison for helping american clients hide their money overseas. he was arrested last month and is now on house arrest. his lawyer says the $104 million reward should encourage more

people to be whistleblowers. council member michael brown will be at a disadvantage heading to the election. someone stole more than $100,000 from his campaign fund. he found out about the theft in june and fired his campaign treasurer. he didn't say who the accused thief is but says he trusted that person for years. >> the person who embezzled from the campaign was someone who had been working with me for more than half a decade. it was someone i had extreme confidence in as well as many members of district officials, not just in the district of columbia ya, but in this region. >> brown has not filed charges in this case but says he wants the person to be prosecuted. a temple hill man is behind bars this morning. he was arrested allegedly after robbing a bank. 33-year-old troy maddox walked in the m&t bank and passed a note to the teller demanding cash and then took off on his bike. police say, once they caught up

with him, they had to taser him to subdue him. maddox was taken to the hospital and released. steep sentences were handed down in the south capitol street mass shooting. five people were killed and nine injured in the march 2010 the shooing. three of the men convicted received life in prison without the chance of parole. another man will spend 54 years. and the man who supplied the weapons will spend 30 years in prison. >> are you satisfied with the sentence? >> not really, but to know that three of them will never have a chance to be on the street again, and the other two, they'll be very old when they do have a chance to come on the streets. >> prosecutors say all of the attacks stemmed from an argument over a missing fake diamond bracelet. hundreds packed the baltimore hebrew memorial yesterday to pay tribute to ravens owner art modell. modell is credited with growing the nfl's tv presence by helping

to found monday night football. he is heavily criticized in cleveland for moving the browns to baltimore. modell died thursday at the age of 87. a brand of cheese products is being recalled after three people in maryland were hospitalized with listeria. forever cheese is recalling their ricotta salata frescolina cheese with lot number t9425 and production code number of 441202. the maryland department of health is advising people not to use these products and avoid using cutting boards or utensils that came in contact with the cheese. residents in las vegas are cleaning up from thunderstorms that caused flash flooding. the rising water damaged about 45 homes. officials in clark county knocked on doors, suggesting residents leave as a precaution. so far, no injuries have been reported. that heavy rain caused delays in and out of the vegas airport too. everything is expected to be back to normal today.

to 8:00 in reston. if you've taken the i-75 and wondered what the red lanes are. people are baffled by the red lanes outside the beltway. vdot says the color is used to draw attention to the lanes which you can only use for certain hours. a green arrow or red "x" shows when you can and cannot use the lanes. the red helps make the roadway even clearer. >> that new color is there just to let people know this is the special lane the green arrow and red x's are referring to. >> and vdot is reinforcing hov lanes on i-66. it's painting a double line to discourage drivers from switching in and out of the lanes whenever they want. >> it's to help drivers know exactly. >> and that you shouldn't be in there all the time. 4:54 now. it might be time to cut back on your time at the office. how about that?

a trail blazing army veteran is celebrating a milestone. >> alice dixon celebrated her 105th birthday yesterday. she deployed to world war ii as a battalion. she was the only battalion comprised of all african-american women. they delivered millions of pieces of mail to soldiers fighting in europe. the veterans department honored miss dixon. she told us the secret to her longevity. >> you have extras, give somebody something else. be kind to people and share. that's why god let me stay here this long. >> i like that. dixon says growing up with eight siblings helped her learn how to do that sharing. she is the oldest surviving member of her unit and one of the oldest surviving veterans of world war ii. what an incredible woman. thank you for your service and happy birthday. >> good advice there for all of us to listen to.
